Final Contemporary Design

After lots of research and practicing different makeup looks I finally came up with my final makeup look, which is to be completed in the timed assessment next week. I looked in many places like books, also the internet including things like Pinterest. I wanted to go for a bold lip look but wanted to mix it up a bit and make it more Elizabethan, therefore I designed the lip style to be in a heart shape in the middle. Having a pale complexion is an Elizabethan trait and I wanted in incorporate this into my design but not fully so I decided to just have white around the eye, including blocking out the brows. I think my design is contemporary because it has modern aspects to it like the rest of the face apart from the eyes being a normal skin tone. Also I decided that on the lips I wanted a glossy look for a more modern feel.
My facechart design for my final design.

A practice of my final design.

Below are some images I used for inspiration for my final design:

Sketches

For one of Kats lessons we were asked to bring along a sketch pad and pencils. We were taught about the basics about how to hold a pencil and then asked to sketch a few objects. We learnt that being a makeup artist you don’t normally just turn up for a job and apply some makeup to a model, but that it is often about the design element to it, and therefore it would be wise to learn about how to sketch. We often have to design facecharts and having this knowledge about sketching will help us along the way.
To start off we just drew straight lines, getting a grips with holding the pencil a certain way.

We then moved onto drawing basic shapes like squares, circles and triangles.

After I attempted 3D shapes, having not done art since year 9 (5 years ago) they weren’t great but we all found it quite funny to see what they all turned out like, my results are below.

We were then set the task to find an object at home and draw that, my chosen object was an apple, as seen below.

Extreme Controuring

We were taught about 2 different ways of contouring; beauty contouring and extreme contouring. With Kat we learnt about both and how they should not be done, for example the extreme beauty contouring where the face becomes completely unrecognisable and the model looks like a completely different person is the wrong. It is not only not very practical (you would need to reapply the makeup often and this is not practical for the fashion industry) but would be bad on the models skin as so much makeup is involved. An example of extreme beauty contouring is below.

With Sue we learnt about the correct way to beauty contour, learning about how to apply the shade in the correct place; for a shade go 1-2 shades darker, feel with the finger for the bone and dot the shade in the chosen places then blend and take down. For highlighting go 1-2 shades lighter, and make sure to not put light reflecting things on blemishes.

In Kats lesson we then learnt about extreme contouring and after a brief demonstration we tried it out on ourselves.

Contemporary Elizabethan Makeup

The further my knowledge on contemporary Elizabethan makeup I took to pinterest to look at some different looks.
I first looked at Elizabeth makeup in general, I looked at the different aspects that made it ‘elizabethan’. The main things were pale complexion, blocked out eyebrows and red lips as seen in the image below of a young Queen Elizabeth I.

To make some of the looks ‘contemporary’ they had more modern aspects to it, for example instead of having all of the face white, just having part of the face pale, or having the pale face but with heavily drawn on browns and a pale lip. Some examples of contemporary Elizabethan makeup designs I found are below.

7 Photographs that changed fashion

We were asked to watch and analyse the film ‘7 photographs that changed fashion’, because I am really into fashion I enjoyed watching this film a lot. The film was about fashion photographer Rankin recreated seven of his favourite images from the fashion industry and how he manages to recreate them.
My 2 favourite images included;

The first image is my favourite because I really found it interesting how photographer Erwin Blumenfeld managed to create this image in 1950 with the technology available. I  also like how in the recreated imaged Heidi Klum changed it slightly by licking her lip adding a touch of seduction to the image and making it her own.

My second favourite image is the photograph of male model David Gandy, in his beautiful state I watched in awe as he posed with the tyres topless and oiled up. I felt like this image had the same feel as the original image, as it kind of had a grungy feel but with you can’t keep your eyes off the male model.

The New Elizabethans

For one of this week’s task we were asked to looked at an article of a list of people who could be said to be ‘new Elizabethans’ (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/bbc/9277886/The-New-Elizabethans-the-full-list.html) After looking through the list we were then asked to pick a personality and explain why we thought they were a ‘new Elizabethan’. My chosen personality is Princess Diana of Wales, I chose her because I felt that she had a strong resemblance to Elizabeth I with the royalty and also the public’s obsession with both of them during their time.
I think the fascination in Diana first begun on her wedding day to Prince Charles, it was watched eagerly by roughly one billion people on televisions around the world and marked as a national holiday in the UK. Four years later the couple had 2 children, around this time as well Diana became known as the ‘People’s Princess’, not as much a royalty, more like a celebrity. With her natural beauty, her height and her grace, her ease with people, her sincere honesty and warmth, it was an easy task for personal stylists to help her become a fashion icon, a role model, and maybe even the most photographed and famous woman in the world.

I think this is also where Princess Diana is linked to Elizabeth I, they both had massive popularity and became fashion icons for their time and are still to be influencing styles now.

The Taming of the Shrew

In this week’s lesson we watched the short film ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, being a modern version it told the story of Katherine Minola who marries in order to obtain her goal of becoming a party leader.  Full of rage and interesting facial expressions Katherine is played by Shirley Henderson who when you first see you instantly thing ‘oh that’s Moaning Myrtle’. Katherine’s sister on the other hand, Bianca couldn't be more different, her long-time manager wants to marry her and in order to put him off she says she won't marry until her sister gets married, thinking this will never happen. So her manager, taking desperate measures ropes in a friend who is titled Earl to meet and marry Kate. The couple being completely different from each other obviously at first don’t get along but after a while is persuaded and agrees to marry Petruchio.

The film also has a few references to the Elizabethan era, in the opening scene Katherine is seen wearing all black including the other characters. Also Kate is often seen wearing an open neck suit linking to Elizabethan styling. Another link to Elizabeth I could be that Katherine is a virgin, her being stubborn and feeling like she doesn’t need a man by her side to become the party leader.

Val Garland

Val Garland is a makeup artist born in Bristol. She has worked with models such a Kate Moss and done runways shows for the likes of Alexander McQueen. She recently worked with Vogue to create the makeup look for Taylor Swift on the cover. In ‘Dazed’ she describes herself as having a bit of a punk spirit, although today being more subtle she states her rebellion by hiding the face with a generous amount of freckles, also seen on Taylor Swift on the November cover of Vogue Magazine.
Below is some of my favourite Val Garland looks:

Face Charts

Achromatic- Designating colour perceived to have zero saturation and therefore no hue, such as neutral greys, white, or black.

Above is my facechart design and below is the look I recreated on myself.

Analogous- similar or corresponding in some respect

Complementary- combining in such a way as to enhance or emphasize the qualities of each other or another.

Complementary- combining in such a way as to enhance or emphasize the qualities of each other or another.

Monochromatic- containing or using only one colour
