Final Evaluation

I have found project ‘New Elizabethans’ really interesting, I have really enjoyed learning about the Elizabethan lifestyles and fashion of the time. Because they didn’t have the resources we have today I was really interesting learning about how they used what they had and made it beneficial. One of my favourite things was learning about the different products they used as cosmetics, for example using cochineal on the lips to achieve a red lip. Learning about how using these products damaged them but they still used them because women wanted to express their personality through the beauty of their makeup.

I also really enjoyed learning about the different techniques that we could use to achieve an Elizabethan look for example, learning to block out the brows. Something I would have liked to have done better would probably be maybe looking at some more Elizabethan portraits for influence and incorporate them into my final design. At the beginning of the course I was slightly worried about my makeup skills, I felt that we were slightly thrown in at the deep end but now I have completed the project I feel confident that it went well.

By doing research into Elizabethan portraits I built up my knowledge on what an ‘Elizabethan look’ is and then incorporated into my design. Also having the technical file was really helpful to me, being able to look back and see how I could achieve makeup techniques that I wasn’t confident in so I could practise them was really helpful. 

Partners assessment of my design

Overall I was pleased with the final outcome of the look my partner did on me. I feel like it wasn’t 100% true to the design but was still a good reflection of what I wanted. Also unfortunately my partner didn’t take very good pictures so you can’t really see what it is like from the images. For my design I wanted a skin coloured based and then just around the eyes the white and then blended out but this wasn’t quite achieved, I also wanted a more matte base. I feel like she achieved the lip look well though, I wanted a heart shape just in the centre and then a little bit of gold on top, this was achieved well.

During the assessment I gave my partner a step by step guide on how to achieve my look, a facechart and also some inspiration images, these are below:

1.       Begin by cleansing toning and moisturising the face

2.       Blocking out the brows, using Prik Stick, apply all over brow and then using Illamasqua powder and patt into place.

3.       Base: To apply the base using Kyrolan foundation in alabaster and a little bit of Illamasqua Skin base. For concealer D1, D2, D6, D8 and D3 using the camouflage palette.

4.       Using the angled liner brush to cover the brows after the foundation apply white supra + skin base together.

5.       Then using the Beauty blending sponge gradually blend the white out on the lids and under the eyes.

6.       After it’s all blended out go over the brows with white aqua palette.

7.       To contour use Kyrolan contouring palette in the shades glamour tan + bronzing summer just under the cheek bone

8.       Then apply powder to the face

9.       For the lips draw the heart shape on using the angled liner brush using LC005, LC007 & LC008 in the lip palette

10.   Apply foundation to the side of the lips where the heart ends to highlight the colour and apply gloss.

11.   Using gold supra colour apply using finger to the cupid bow.

Final Assessment

I feel like my assessment went quite well and I think I followed the designs my partner gave me. Because we practised a few times I felt more confident in doing it, I think I managed to block the eyebrows well using the glue technique. Something I struggled with was because my partners design had black eye shadow I found it difficult to not make it bleed and it also kept dropping under the eyes. To stop this from happening I asked my partner to keep her eyes shut and used powder to try keep it in place until it had been photographed. Because I finished the look before the time was up I had chance to make sure that it was all right and perfect the look.

Because I had the opportunity to practise as well I could also practise my symmetry work on drawing the eyebrows and the eye shadow which was really helpful. 

Try out my partners look

As well as my partner practising my look I also practised her look. I felt that practising her design made me feel more confident for the actual assessment and that I wasn’t as worried about doing it, I could make sure that I could achieve it in the time we had. My partners design also had ‘blocked out’ brows so it was good to get a few practises at this. My partner’s looks included using a black eye shadow which I found quite hard to use as it kept dropping under the lid and kept bleeding. By practising this I could try different ways of not making this happen in the actual assessment and also make it perfect. 

Trying out my makeup look

To make sure that my partner could achieve my makeup look we practised it a few times. I felt that practising was a really good thing to do because we could make sure that we could achieve it in the time and also we could practise the look. My chosen design had ‘blocked out’ brows and this is a hard process therefore we needed to practise. Also doing this we could see if there was any other products I needed to bring in that the kit didn’t include, for example on the eyes I had white and it needed to be blended out well, to achieve this look the best we used a beauty blender sponge.

By having the practise sessions we could try different techniques to try and make the look its best, for example there is 2 different ways of blocking out the brows, we first tried the soap and water techniques but decided in the end that using prik stick glue had the best outcome. 

3 Brush Challenge

We were given the task of completing the 3 brush challenge this week, it was something I was quite looking forward to trying out as we could do any makeup look we wanted the only rule was we could only use 3 brushes. I used Sammie as a model and then we swapped around and she did it on me. To complete this look the 3 brushes I chose to use was a foundation brush, angled liner and then a large shadow brush.

First I made sure the skin was cleansed, toned and moisturised. I then applied Illamasqua primer and Kyrolan foundation in alabaster using the foundation brush. I then powdered using a powder puff (I hope this doesn’t count as a brush). To apply some blush I just used my finger as I felt I could achieve the look I wanted without needing a brush. For the eyes I used my naked 2 palette in shade ‘booty call’ first all over the lids and then I cleaned the brush to use a different colour in which I used ‘tease’ and ‘chopper’ using the large shadow brush. For the lips I used MAC ‘all fired  up’ going round the lip using the angled liner brush and then filled the rest in dapping it on with my fingers and filling in with the brush.

I found this challenge really fun to do as it was really relaxed and a fun thing to try out and see if I could achieve, the images of the final look are below. 

Contemporary Picture

When I first looked at this image I immediately thought it had an Elizabethan feel to it, the sitter, Lily Cole’s red hair embodies Elizabethan styles. In the image her makeup is done with a pale complexion, red cheeks, blocked eyebrows and a metallic looking lip. Hair played a very important part in Elizabethan looks and also does in this image, as it is so large and textured. The cheeks really stand out because of the pale skin which highlights Elizabethan styles.
